Chapter 7 Her Mom And Brother
When Edie signed the prenuptial agreement, one of the clauses was that after marriage, no one from the Brooks family could interfere with her normal work. schedule.
However, considering her line of work required her to sleep late and wake up early, she rarely encountered any members of the Brooks family anyway.
She put on her white coat and headed straight to the hospital.
The gossip about the Thornton family’s real and fake daughters was all over town, and some nurses loved nothing more than chatting about it during their free time in the break room.
“Ms. Thornton’s family has been in such turmoil. She can no longer be the heiress. If it were me, I would be down for quite some time. How come she acts like nothing happened?”
“She might be a bit superficial, but with her looks, plenty of people are willing to fawn over her. Does she really need a tycoon as a father?”
“True. What do you guys think? Is her promotion really because of an affair with Mr. Castillo, just like they say?”
“It’s hard to say.”
As the nurses were chattering, they noticed Edie peering through the observation window and casually remarking, “Let me see the night shift records, please.”
They quickly shut up and scrambled to hand over the records.
After taking them, Edie reviewed them and handed them back, leaving with a comment. “Everyone’s talking about me having an affair with Mr. Castillo. You should be careful what you say. Don’t you fear I’ll report you?“,
Edie turned and left, leaving the nurses blushing and worried.
She had already taken annual leave and was there today to hand over her duties.
After completing the final tasks, she took her leave form to get Troy Castillo, the director’s signature.
As Troy signed, he asked, “Are you attending this year’s summit?”
“No,” Edie replied, waving her leave form. “I’m off.”
Troy was Edie’s senior. He was also the heir to Castillo’s traditional medicine. Edie had been studying medicine for ten years, but the medical skills she learned were different from Troy’s.
“I don’t get it. How did you develop such a disinterested personality at your age? You skip it every year.” Troy opened a jar of boiled water and took a sip. He then teased her. “If it weren’t for your high–level surgery videos and medical achievements being

submitted every year, other hospitals would have doubted whether the legendary Citrus was fabricated by us. A model worker taking annual leave, who would’ve thought?”
“Well, getting married does require honeymoon time,” Edie said.
Troy nearly spit out his water in surprise. ‘Getting married? Someone actually managed to warm up this ice–cold girl?‘
After leaving the hospital, Edie drove to a famous urban village in Clerlun. This area was full of houses from the last century, old, dilapidated, and small, and it was the last remaining area in the city waiting to be demolished.
Edie’s biological mother and older brother lived there, and Eliza had also lived there
before.
When the paternity test was just released, Edie met them for the first time. Later, due to the disturbance caused by this issue and her busy work, she had been squeezing time to handle this matter, asking for a week’s annual leave from work and looking for a new place to move into. =^–It was not until today that she finally found time to come and pick them up.
Following the address, she walked into a narrow alleyway filled with spiderweb–like power lines. Before she even reached her destination, she encountered a rather shady
scene.
“What you’re doing is illegal! We won’t give you any money even if we have it.”
“If you pay us, we’ll protect you in this area. It’s such a great thing for all of us. Why do you have to make it so unpleasant? Fine, if you won’t give us the money, guys, smash their place!”
With that, there was a cacophony of curses, cries, and chaotic noises.
Before Edie could approach, the scene reversed dramatically. A few troublemakers were pinned down and beaten by a suddenly appearing young man, leaving them helpless.
The young man expressionlessly kicked away the last troublemaker rushing forward with a steel pipe and then helped up a woman cowering in the corner.
He said, “Mom, are you okay?”
This was Edie’s elder brother, Jefferson Lane, and their mother, Madeline Lane.
