Chapter 27 Suppressing His Desire
Edie had always been the one to stay overnight and take care of Carl.
Just like always, Edie gave Carl a bath with more care than any caregiver would.
But the touch, the sound, the smell, every sense was infinitely magnified in Carl, as if even the air had become thick and sticky.
For Carl, who was only conscious while in a vegetative state, it was unbearable. Let alone now, when his immobility was just an act.
This was the first time Edie had helped him take a bath while he could fully control his body.
He had a hard time controlling himself.
For him, Edie’s fingers were devoid of any particular meaning; they weren’t even like fingers–they were just a misty, wet cloud, everywhere at once.
Wherever they touched, it felt like a bonfire in the dark night or an oasis in the desert, thrilling enough to make someone shiver.
Before, Carl could only feel it, but now he had to suppress his own reactions.
After washing, dressing, and tucking him back into bed, Edie tidied up and then turned off the lights.
The VIP ward was like a five–star hotel, with a bed so big that one rolling around in it wouldn’t be a problem.
It was unknown how long it had been, but after all the commotion died down and Edie‘ s breathing became steady and long, Carl opened his eyes and cursed under his breath.
He casually imagined in his mind how Edie had held him in the bathroom, helping him
with his bath.
The heat in his eyes hadn’t faded yet. He silently turned his head slightly to look at Edie, his gaze seeming capable of unbuttoning her blouse.
The next day, when there were no outsiders in the ward, Alec came to report to Carl.

He said, “Based on our investigation, the possibility of Vincent being behind your car accident has basically been ruled out.”
Carl said, “He is not stupid. He’s not the kind of person who would do something so brazen.
Alec added, “The driver insists that the brakes failed, and that’s why he crashed. We couldn’t find any evidence, so it’s been classified as a regular traffic accident.”
کر
“No evidence?” Carl said coldly, “Find the driver’s family, give them money, get the driver bailed out of jail, and then catch him and rough him up a bit. I want to see how

long he can last.”
Carl had never been a good person.
Alec shivered at the coldness in Carl’s words. “Okay. And before, you asked me to investigate Mrs. Brooks. Her ex–boyfriend is Sebastian. They broke up before she married you, but I heard that Nathaniel had a thing for her. They were college classmates.”
Carl asked, “Are there no other suitors?”
Alec carefully chose his words. “Those are the only young men close to her. Mrs. Brooks is very career–oriented, and that relationship with Sebastian was the only romantic one she had.”
Carl let out a contemptuous, cold laugh. ‘Sebastian? He’s just nobody.‘
He hadn’t forgotten what Edie had said at his bedside, that she was with Sebastian just to upset him.
He instructed, “Find a way to let my mom know that I don’t object to this marriage arrangement. Tell her to stop trying to set me up with any riff–raff.”
If she kept it up, it might just shorten Carl’s life by several years.
Alec agreed and left the ward.
But before Alec could approach Zelda, a few days later, Zelda called Alec herself.
It was clear that Zelda had also received the exorbitant bill from Edie’s shopping spree and was furious.
“What has she bought with my son’s card?” Zelda slapped the bill on the table and cursed, “It’s outrageous! Not only did she buy tens of millions of dollars in jewelry, but she even went to a nightclub? She’s a married woman!”
Alec had already discussed this with Carl and was thus on Edie’s side, speaking up for her. “That nightclub visit was with Ms. Byrd and Mrs. Brooks.”
Upon hearing the surname, Zelda paused. “A member of the Byrd family?”
Alec confirmed, “Yes, the eldest heiress of the Byrd family. She and Mrs. Brooks are good friends.”
Zelda’s expression softened slightly. “Well, it’s not bad to be friendly with a Byrd family member, but we can’t let her keep spending like this. Go freeze the card.”
