Chapter 20 Carl’s Mishap
For the first time, Carl felt a pang of regret. He wondered why he had never been curious about Edie’s appearance over the years…
Edie listened, not even bothering to look up. ‘Given the 15 million dollars they offered and more than enough marital property to last a lifetime, anyone in my position would do the same.
‘Let alone take care of Carl, even if he had kept another woman and had a child with her, I wouldn’t mind and would even be willing to take care of his child.‘
The nurses continued chatting.
“Mrs. Brooks has such a pretty face; she could become a top star in the entertainment industry.”
“Yeah, but she relies on talent instead of looks. She is the chief physician at the neighboring Clerlun Hospital and is the youngest in the country…”
Hearing their words, Carl was strongly hoping that he could see what Edie looked like.
Madeline had moved into the apartment Edie had prepared.
Edie found some time to check on her and noticed that Jefferson hadn’t moved in,
although he was having his meal there that day.
At the dinner table, Madeline asked her, “Edie, are you still living with the Thornton family?”
Edie replied, “I live with my in–laws. If you miss me, I can move in for a few days.”
Madeline said, “No, it’s too much trouble.”
The apartment was indeed much better than the rundown alley that was about to be demolished. Madeline had never lived in such a place and felt a bit out of place doing anything.
She said, “I heard from Jefferson that your husband is a vegetable?”
Edie nodded. “Yes.”
Madeline asked cautiously, “Did the Thornton family force you to him? I’ve heard rich families have arranged marriages…”
Edie didn’t want Madeline to know about the dirty details, so she comforted her, “No, they didn’t. My husband and I have been engaged for a long time; I married him willingly.”
After all, using Carl as a shield so many times, one more time wouldn’t matter.
Madeline then asked Jefferson, “You were supposed to visit Eliza last time. Did you see her?”

“Yes. She’s enjoying her life as a rich lady. She doesn’t want us showing up unannounced,” Jefferson said with drooping eyes. “Let’s drop the subject and eat.”
Hearing this, Madeline knew better than to pry further and sighed.
The meal was finished in silence.
After eating, Jefferson put down his fork and said, “If you have the time, think about your own daughter more often. She’s not just hanging around here for no reason.”
He meant Edie.
Even though his attitude toward her had softened, he was still stubborn and hot- headed by nature.
Madeline smiled. “Right… Edie, I’ve prepared quite a bit of food for Christmas. Take some back with you.”
Edie was happy. “Sure, I love yummy food.”
She wanted to stay a little longer, but soon after, a phone call came. “Mrs. Brooks, there’s an issue with Mr. Brooks over here.”
She hurried back and found that doctors and nurses were already in the ward.
After she left, Sophia was the one who stayed in the hospital to keep watch. Suddenly, this incident happened, leaving her completely at a loss as to what to do.
She had already called her parents. When she saw Edie come over first, she couldn’t hold it in any longer. “E–Edie…”
Edie comforted her, “It’s okay.”
Sophia was so scared that her face turned pale. “Carl suddenly started convulsing… I… I don’t know what happened.”
Edie explained, “A vegetative state is very fragile; various complications are normal.”
Sophia was still very nervous, clinging to Edie’s arm.
From inside came the doctor’s voice. “Blood oxygen at 90, heart rate at 150…”
Edie wasn’t Carl’s attending physician and didn’t know why Carl’s vital signs had suddenly become abnormal.
After the doctor finished the emergency treatment and came out, Edie asked, “Is he stable now?“–
The doctor nodded. “We’ll have to see if there’s any improvement tomorrow. If not… be mentally prepared.”
Too many people were concerned about Carl’s condition. The news of his improvement had already spread, leading everyone to believe he had a better chance of waking up. But now, with his condition taking a sudden downturn, he was rushed to the emergency room.
Such news couldn’t be hidden.
