Chapter 19 A Kiss For Carl
What Nathaniel said became more and more outrageous.
Edie interrupted him, massaging her temples in annoyance. “As a friend, you’re overstepping.”
Nathaniel gave a bitter smile. “After all these years, you know my feelings for you.”
He had never hidden his feelings for her.
“I’ve been very clear about rejecting you from the start,” Edie said. “I first accepted Sebastian’s pursuit and then married Carl. I never considered you. I thought you understood what I meant.”
‘Why would Edie rather marry Carl than even consider me?‘ thought Nathaniel. “I’m just a bit… unwilling to accept it. Carl is now a vegetable. How am I inferior to him?”
Seeing Nathaniel like this, Edie knew he probably–wouldn’t give up until he got some
kind of answer.
But if she didn’t like him, she didn’t. There were no reasons.
Edie sighed at Nathaniel’s stubborn gaze, then took Carl’s hand and intertwined her fingers with his. She bent down and gently kissed Carl’s pale lips.
It was a light, fleeting kiss, but enough to convince Nathaniel.
Edie straightened up, still holding Carl’s hand. “There’s nothing that makes you inferior to him. I’ve always liked Carl. I was only with Sebastian to make him jealous.”
Her serious nonsense shocked Nathaniel.
She added, “Don’t you get it? Now that he’s a vegetable, I have my chance.”
Nathaniel couldn’t hide his astonishment and was at a loss for words for a while,
finding it hard to believe what Edie had said.
Edie was lying through her teeth, not knowing she had shocked not only Nathaniel but also Carl, who was in the hospital bed.
When Edie’s soft lips touched his, Carl was momentarily stunned.
He suddenly remembered something Edie had said before.
“If you had become a vegetable earlier, I would have married you long ago.”
“Forget it. Seeing how you were before, I guess you didn’t want to stick to our marriage contract anyway.”
He was shocked. ‘He married me not for my money but because she truly likes me?‘
Nathaniel still couldn’t believe it. “Edie… are you serious? I…”
Edie cut him off. “Yes, I’m serious. You don’t need to worry about me.”
Nathaniel struggled to speak. “Edie…”

Edie continued, “I’m sorry, Nathaniel. I’m glad you came to visit my husband, but if you mention anything else, we have nothing more to talk about.”
Nathaniel wanted to say more, but hearing Edie call Carl “husband” and seeing her completely devoted to Carl, he couldn’t even pretend to be cultured anymore. He bit his lip and stumbled out of the ward.
Edie found it increasingly handy to have Carl as a vegetable.
He kept trouble and her suitors at bay, plus he offered her money.
She sincerely thought, ‘It would be great if you never woke up.’
Since it was easier to observe Carl’s condition in the hospital, Edie had been staying
there to take care of him.
She wheeled the thoughtful Carl out into the garden for some sun.
Not far away, some nurses gossiped quietly.
“Is that Mrs. Brooks?”
“Mrs. Brooks takes such good care of Mr. Brooks. She does everything herself.”
“It must be true love. With Mrs, Brooks being so beautiful, she still married him even in
his condition.”
Hearing this, Carl somehow thought, ‘So she wants me to become a vegetable because then she’d have the chance to marry me?‘
