Chapter 11 Still A Real Man
The medical team that the Brooks family spent a fortune on arrived very quickly. When they were lifting Carl onto the stretcher, Edie glanced at Carl’s middle part.
‘It has calmed down.‘ Edie let out a cold laugh. ‘It’s a pity he didn’t end up making himself the butt of everyone’s jokes!
After a flurry of commotion, the pampered heir of the Brooks family was rushed to the hospital.
While still examining him, a doctor took the opportunity to ask Edie, “How did you notice that he was conscious?”
In front of everyone, Edie’s lips curled up. She chose to maintain Carl’s dignity. “His finger moved a little while I was dressing him.”
Seeing Carl in the hospital room covered in equipment, Zelda hurriedly asked, “What exactly is wrong with my son? Will he wake up soon?”
The doctor said to Zelda, “It’s a good sign that Mr. Brooks has regained some consciousness. Since his coma hasn’t lasted long, the chances of him waking up are very high,”
Zelda’s mind directly translated “the chances of him waking up are very high” into “he will definitely wake up.” You must save him. Such a big company is waiting for him to keep it going,” said she.
“We will do our best,” the doctor reassured Zelda. “Mr. Brooks’s body twitching isn’t very frequent this time, and, fortunately, we discovered it in time.”
Zelda’s expression finally relaxed a bit/She turned to Edie and said, “Just quit your job and focus on Carl. After Carl gets better, you will have children and stay at home to be a good wife and mother.”
For Zelda to say such a thing, asking Edie to bear children for the Brooks family, was already a reluctant acknowledgment of Edie as her daughter-in–law.
Edie was beautiful and intelligent, so the children she would have with Carl wouldn’t be bad at all.
If Zelda had said this to another woman, that woman would probably have been eager
to announce it right away.
Before Carl’s accident, there was not a single unmarried socialite in Clerlun who did not want to marry into the Brooks family.
Zelda thought that after she said this, even if Edie did not express her gratitude tearfully, she should at least show some reaction. But to her surprise, Edie did not even look a little happy. Instead, she said, “Zelda, the contract clearly states that you won’t interfere with my work. If you insist on making me a full–time housewife, then when Carl wakes up, we’ll just have to get a divorce.”

Chapter 11 Still A Real Man
Zelda looked as if she had heard something unbelievable. “What did you say?”
Edie remained calm. “If you don’t like me, there are plenty of good and compliant daughters–in–law for you to choose from.”
Zelda’s eyes widened. Edie’s refusal to go along with her was undoubtedly embarrassing her. She said, “Who do you think you’re putting on airs for? If Carl hadn’t had this accident, do you think you could have the chance to marry him?”
What Zelda meant was: I chose you, so you should know your place and stop
pretending to be so high and mighty.
Sophia, who was nearby, was dumbfounded for a moment.
She also knew Edie. In the circle of socialites, Edie belonged to the aloof type, an ice- cold beauty through and through.
It was not surprising at all that she did not show Zelda any respect.
Sophia quickly tried to persuade Zelda. “Mom… what you said is too harsh. We’re still outside. Let’s talk about this when we get home”
Zelda asked, “My words are harsh? You didn’t hear what she…”
Fabian suddenly barked in a low voice, “Have you made a fuss enough?”
Zelda fell silent, not daring to argue with Fabian.
Fabian added, “Edie is willing to take care of Carl; that’s more than enough. If it weren’t for your snobbery about this marriage contract back then and your pickiness about our daughter–in–law, would Carl still be unmarried at the age of twenty–eight?”
Zelda was left speechless by Fabian’s words, her eyes red and teary, not knowing if it was from regret or sadness over what had happened to Carl.
“You go home and think about it carefully,” Fabian told Zelda. Then his expression softened, and he said gently to Edie, “Thank you for being so attentive tonight.”
Edie respected the reasonable Fabian quite a bit. “It’s my duty. You all go back first. I’ll take care of him here.”
After everyone left, Edie looked at Carl on the bed and ground her teeth in shame and
anger.
A patient in a conscious state could indeed have those kinds of reactions when their body was stimulated.
Edie knew it was not Carl’s/fault.
She took a deep breath, trying to convince herself, “Okay, at least my husband’s still a real man.”
Carl was speechless./
Being affirmed in that aspect by his wife, he let out a fake, cold laugh in annoyance in
his heart.
