Chapter 29
Apr 30, 2025
Damon’s POV
I drove roughly into St. Jude’s. I had barely parked the car before jumping out and carrying Miranda in bridal style into my hospital in panic.
Our wedding was tomorrow.
“Hang in there, Miranda,” I murmured, my voice trembling with fear. “Just stay with me.”
“Nurse, help!” I raced into the hospital, just as two nurses rushed towards me. The third one was wheeling a stretcher towards us.
“Lay her there. What happened?”
“She suddenly lost consciousness,” I explained to them as I laid her gently on the stretcher.
I didn’t want to cause her any pain or discomfort.
“Sir, please wait here,” a nurse instructed gently as they wheeled her to the emergency room. “We’ll update you as soon as we can.”
I began to pace to and fro until it hit that I needed to call her parents. I dialed her mother’s number and she picked at the third ring.
“Mrs. Steven,” I began, struggling to keep my voice steady, “it’s Damon. There’s been an incident with Miranda. We’re at the hospital.”
“What? Where? What hospital?”
“St. Jude’s.” I replied.
“We’re on our way,” she said, her voice tight with worry.
Twenty minutes later, they arrived and began to bombard me with questions. Mr. Steven was a bit composed but his wife wasn’t.
She was hysteric.
“What happened to our princess?” she demanded, eyes glistening with unshed tears.
I decided to explain things.
“She had a craving for pizza,” I explained. “I went to get it, but there were delays. When I returned, she was upset. We had a disagreement, and I stepped out to give her space. But something didn’t sit right with me, so I went back in and found her unconscious on the floor.”
“Could it have been the pizza? Food poisoning?”
“I hadn’t even opened the box. She hadn’t eaten any of it.” I told her.
“Then what could it be? Oh, God. Nothing must happen to my child. Tomorrow is her wedding.”
She suddenly looked like an idea just hit her. She jerked upright and stared at me. “Could it be the wedding? Does she not want the wedding? Did she hurt herself? She didn’t look like she wasn’t happy about the wedding? Did something else happen between you two?”
I shook my head. “We need to calm down and wait for the doctor to know what is wrong.”
I thought that would assure her but she placed her two hands over her head, screaming again.
The doctor walked out and we rushed towards him.
“Is she okay?” Mr. Steven demanded.
“Doctor, how is Miranda?” I asked. Mrs. Steven also rushed forward.
The doctor smiled. “She is fine. In fact they are both fine.”
I raised a brow and Mr. Steven turned to look at me like I had grown two horns.
“What are you talking about?” Mrs. Steven cut in.
The doctor smiled again and stretched his hand towards me for a handshake. “Congratulations, Mr. Aldridge.”
My heart stilled.
“What do you mean?” her father asked, voice tinged with apprehension.
“Miranda is two weeks pregnant. The fainting spell was likely due to early pregnancy symptoms combined with stress. She’s resting now and will be fine.”
“What?!” Her parents exclaimed and turned to me.
The words processed in my brain and I also exclaimed. “What?!
